A couple, who were plagued by doubts following the birth of their son, had their suspicions confirmed when they learned he had been switched at birth in El Salvador.

However, after legal intervention and a considerable amount of anguish, the infant has finally been reunited to his parents.

British-native, Richard Cushworth, and his wife Mercedes Casanellas travelled to Mercedes' native country for the birth of their child, but upon arriving back to their home in Texas, the couple became concerned by the child's skin tone and features.

Certain the little boy she had given birth to in May was not the same child they were caring for in Texas, Mercedes and Richard returned to El Salvador with DNA evidence which indicated it was unlikely the couple were the biological parents of the child they had brought to the United States.

The couple's doctor, who was arrested before appearing in court amid chaotic and highly emotional scenes yesterday afternoon, protested his innocence and was eventually bailed.

Defending the doctor at the centre of the shocking case, El Salvador's society of gynaecology and obstetrics insisted he could not be held responsible for any wrongdoing as he would have handed the infant to a paediatrician and a nurse following its arrival.

Commenting on the case at the time, Francisco Meneses, the lawyer representing the couple, appealed for those involved to come forward with any information they may have regarding the circumstances surrounding the child's delivery.

"We don't have anything against the people who were involved during the baby's birth, but we want all these people to put their hands on their hearts because from the doctor who performed the surgery, the paediatrician, anaesthesiologist, and the two nurses who were in the delivery room, it's very important for them to tell us what happened."

Following the court appearance, the stunned couple were reunited with their biological son and while initial media reports suggested the couple would be raising both babies alongside each other, the parents of the other child have now been reunited with their own son having only learned of his true identity on Monday.

Commenting on the other family's reaction to the news, Richard's father, David, said: "I feel for the other family. We know nothing about them, except that they only just found out today that their baby isn't really theirs. It must have been devastating."

Echoing the sentiments,Prosecutor General Luis Martinez said "We have returned the babies to their legitimate parents. We understand the painful drama of these two families. We are talking about two children who were swapped."

The bittersweet exchange took place in the presence of a judge at the Prosecutor General's office in Santa Elena, a suburb of San Salvador.
