The way the modern fashion world has gone in recent years, even newborn babies can sometimes be kitted out to look trendier and more fashionable than you or I.

However, one clothing store’s latest line for children has well and truly split opinion on dressing our little ones like mini versions of ourselves.

The store is American label Old Navy, and the item in question is the ‘Boyfriend Jean’ – for babies.

Yes, while you may barely know the difference between your boyfriend and your cigarette cut, it appears that your baby can still be the trendiest little tyke around with this new range, which comes in seven styles.

While there doesn’t seem to be any issue with the garment itself – a relaxed-fit, slouched style of jean – it’s the name that has irked some parents, with many posing the question of whether it is appropriate for tiny tots to wear ‘boyfriend’ style.

Taking to social media to share their views, parents appeared to be split on the issue.

One Twitter user wrote: “No, really…what? This isn’t a thing, is it?”, while another commented, “Just…ewww.”

Meanwhile, others have branded the garment as simply “cute”.

Responding to the controversy surrounding the line, Old Navy said in a statement: “Old Navy creates fashion essentials that celebrate current trends and styles for the whole family. Our product names refer to popular styles, and are intended to describe only the fit, cut and style.”

“It is never our intention to offend anyone, and we appreciate this feedback from our customers,” they added.

What are your thoughts – is it inappropriate, or are people blowing the topic out of proportion?
