2015 was the year where our little ones became captivated by unicorns and mermaids, and even little North West and Penelope Disick got in on the action.

As a result, there has been a rise in the popularity of ‘mermaid tails’ of late, with many little ones asking Santa for the sweet toy that binds their legs together into a tail-fin.

This week, however, international authorities have issued warnings over the dangers of mermaid tails when used in water.

Following a similar warning from the US, an Australian watchdog reminded parents that the ‘tails’ can constrict a child while swimming, which could have serious results.

“These aquatic toys could present a risk for a young child, particularly if they are not a strong swimmer,” said Tom Godfrey, of consumer advocacy group CHOICE.

A video was also circulated to highlight the danger of the toy. In the video, a little girl is seen getting into trouble after diving under the water in a paddling pool, with her mother having to pull her up to the surface.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” the mother is heard saying, as her little girl catches her breath. It’s frightening to think of what might have happened had the child not been supervised.

Just like the now infamous hoverboard, the mermaid tail has been recalled in several countries over safety risks.
