It’s one of the nicest spots in Dublin, and especially popular among families enjoying a day out in the capital; but officials at Phoenix Park have issued an important safety warning this week.

Members of the public have been warned not to feed or approach the fallow deer in the park, and to always remain at least 50 metres away from the creatures during a visit.

The warning comes as experts claim more and more people are breaking the rule against feeding the deer, despite the presence of signs all around the park.

According to reports, photos are popping up online showing visitors and even small children feeding crisps and other unsuitable foods to the wild creatures.

Now, with mating season approaching, park officials are keen to nip the rule-breaking in the bud, for fear someone will get hurt.

An infographic has now been shared to the official Phoenix Park website, instructing all prospective visitors to:

  • Always maintain a distance of at least 50 metres from the deer
  • Keep dogs on their leads, at a distance from the animals
  • Be careful when approaching the deer
  • Avoid feeding or touching the deer
  • Be vigilant at all times when visiting the deer

Everyone planning a visit to the Park needs to keep these rules in mind.
