As parents we all know how horrifying it is to lose sight of our child for even a few moments, so it's no surprise a recent tweet published by Hackney Police has come in for such backlash today.

While drawing the public's attention to a missing toddler case earlier today, the force attempted a lighthearted approach to the report in a move which was seriously slammed by members of the public.

Highlighting the fact they had recently come in contact with a child who may have become separated from his parents or guardians, Hackney Police began their post by asking: "Have you lost a two/three year old child?"

"If you have, great news! We've found one! Get in touch via 101. Quote CAD1809/16 #ResponseB" read the post which sparked outrage among many Twitter users earlier today.

Taking umbrage with the tweet, one member of the public acknowledged police endeavours, but felt compelled to draw down on their tone, writing: "Finding 1 is good - they are safe but the tone is not appropriate. This is worded like a found dog."

Echoing these sentiments, another Twitter user opined: "The child is not a piece of lost property. From the manner of the tweet that's what it comes across as" while another admitted: "I genuinely thought this was a gag. The tone is soooo wrong."

Defending the force against the backlash, some members of the public suggested that the tone was merely celebratory and paid tribute to the officer's hard work.

Thankfully, the parents of the child have since been located, with Hackney MPS taking to Twitter to inform the public, writing: "Thank you for all your RTs both parents for our found toddler have now been located. And we will be speaking with them shortly."
