Police in Germany have launched an investigation this week, after eBay reported a user for allegedly trying to sell a baby online.

According to reports, photos of a baby girl were posted to the buy-and-sell website, with the description reading: “Child, 40 days old named Maria…for sale.”

The person who posted the advert also included an asking price of just over €5.5k.

Needless to say, the advert attracted a lot of attention, and it wasn’t long before it was brought to the attention of the admin team at eBay.

Just hours after being posted to the website, the advert was removed – but not before eBay had passed the poster’s details on to the police.

German authorities are said to have launched an investigation into the incident and the poster, who is believed to be from Duisburg, in the North Rhine-Westphalia area of the country.

EBay’s administrative team is still considering the possibility that the advert may have been some kind of disturbing hoax or prank.

Let’s hope police get to the bottom of this shocking case, and that the child involved is safe and sound.
