The heartwarming story of a New York City police officer who decided to pick up the tab for goods stolen by a struggling young mum delighted members of the public in recent days, so we can only imagine how touched they'll be by the actions of Michigan police officers, Sgt. Adam Lamb, John Balowski and Kyle Boyd.

Responding to a call from well-known chain, Walmart, in October, the three officers found themselves confronted with an unenviable situation which would test even the toughest of officials,

Speaking to Mason Country Press this week, Sgt. Lamb explained that a couple with two young children had recently been accused of stealing hunting supplies and children's shoes.

Upon investigating the incident, the officers found themselves conflicted between adhering to the letter of the law and showing compassion for the couple who admitted they were struggling financially and were currently incapable of feeding themselves or putting shoes on their childrens' feet.

Opening up about the incident which has made headlines just this week, Sgt. Lamb explained: "The children looked to be aged two and four. We found out through speaking with them that they were having an extremely difficult time financially, which is why they stole the items."

Clearly overwhelmed by the altercation, the couples' children grew upset, with Sgt. Lamb remembering: "The kids were crying and the 4-year-old kept asking us not to arrest their daddy. It’s always a tough position to be in, because when the law is broken we have to do our jobs."

Aware of the impact the incident could have on the young children, the officer continued: "It’s tough for kids to see their daddy get arrested. We don’t want kids to have the impression that police are people who take their parents away."

Reluctant to bring further heartache to the struggling family, the officers charged the father with a misdemeanour before clubbing together to buy shoes for the children which were gratefully received by their emotional parents.

Eager to play down the good deed, Sgt. Lamb insisted that the gesture was not unique, saying: "We weren’t looking for any recognition. Any one of the deputies in this department would do and has done the same thing."

However, it seems one Walmart employee, who was wholly touched by the gesture, decided to inform their Sheriff of the good work which was being done by his officers -  a decision which saw the three officers honoured this week.

Commenting on the incident, Sheriff Kim Cole showed little surprise, saying: "I hear these stories all the time, not from my deputies but from the public. These men didn’t do anything for any glory and didn’t even think it necessary to tell me about what they did."

"They love serving and ask nothing in return. They are similar to officers in uniform who daily protect and serve their citizens across the country," he finished.
