You truly never know what is going on in someone else’s life, and while that is never a reason to break the law, it can spark incredible compassion in others.

A policeman in New York has made headlines today, after paying for the goods a mother stole in order to make a birthday cake for her child.

According to the New York Post, Officer Michael Kotsonis was called to a store last week to deal with the theft. He was told that the woman had stolen cake mix and “a couple of things of frosting”.

After finding out the woman’s identity, Officer Kotsonis went to her home to speak with her and take the goods back. It was during this visit, however, that the 19-year-old officer learned that the woman had stolen the goods to bake a cake for her child’s birthday.

Moved by the woman’s plight, Officer Kotsonis went back to the store and picked up the tab for the stolen goods.

Explaining the reasoning behind his gesture, Officer Kotsonis admitted that while he would never condone theft, he couldn’t stand by and see a child go without a cake on their birthday.
