We have heard of some pretty alarming flights of fancy in recent times, but this one has to be one of the most terrifying that we have ever reported on.

The parents of a two-year-old girl in Detroit have been warned by authorities, after footage emerged of her walking alone at night to a nearby petrol station.

According to reports, the child popped out for some sweets, all by herself, stunning store owner Mohamad Bazzi.

Speaking to Inside Edition, Bazzi recounted how the child walked into the store and put two pennies up on the counter, proceeding to ask him for food.

A shocked Bazzi went on to call the police, who took the young girl into their custody.

The authorities managed to track down the girl's parents, who live just across the road from the store, and they arrived at the police station an hour later to collect their daughter.

A local news station reports that the parents had no idea that their child had left the house.

Investigating police chief Kevin Coney publicly shamed the couple, telling local media: "There's a two-year-old girl walking across the street at night! To a gas station! Fully dressed! And you [the parents] come in, like, 'So what?'"
