A British politician has come under fire after insulting working mothers on live TV.

Leader of the UK Independent Party (UKIP) Nigel Farage has been criticised for saying that new mothers should expect to fall behind in their careers because it is a “fact of life”, during an appearance on ITV show Loose Women.

Farage was typically candid as he shared his thoughts on new mothers in the workplace, saying that he believes them to be “disadvantaged” when it comes to their careers.

“If you’re a doctor, a lawyer, a researcher; you’re a woman, you have a baby, you take six months or a year off, come back – you are not disadvantaged at all in that job. But there are other jobs in which, if you take six months off and come back, you actually find yourself behind the rest of the pack and earning less money,” he said.

“Now that is a fact of life. It’s difficult to change that,” Farage added.

Needless to say, many viewers were taken aback by his comments, particularly in light of his recent comments that new mothers 'should expect to earn less than men'.
