Depression during and after pregnancy is not uncommon and, unfortunately, many mums experience some form of it.

Hormonal changes and the daily stress that comes with pregnancy can contribute and it’s important that it is tackled as soon as possible, as children are more likely to develop it in their teens if their mother experienced it during pregnancy.

New mums need to be aware that depression can also appear after the birth of their little one. At a time when they should be enjoying their new arrival, feelings of being overwhelmed can develop with some mums feeling like they can’t cope at all.

Pregnancy and motherhood are life-changing experiences and it’s important that you talk to your GP or midwife if you are are feeling overwhelmed or depressed.
