Any woman who has gone through a pregnancy will know only too well how irritating it can be to receive unsolicited advice from ‘do-gooders’, and so you may feel your blood boiling after reading the following report.

A pregnant mum has been left angry and frustrated after being ‘refused’ caffeine by a café barista.

Alexandra Smith is currently 27 weeks pregnant with her third child, and after fasting for 12 hours for blood tests, she was really looking forward to a tasty coffee.

However, when she placed her order in a local café, she was met with a firm refusal from the male barista behind the counter.

The education editor of the Sydney Morning Herald, Alexandra took to the internet to share the experience.

She recalled: “‘No,’ he responded, motioning towards my belly. ‘No caffeine for you.’ I thought I misheard. This was a coffee I was ordering, not a martini.”

The barista then laid Alexandra’s options out for her: a decaffeinated coffee or a flat white.

Despite her anger, Alexandra admitted that ‘mother guilt’ prompted her to compromise over the flat white.

“Of course, I should have protested or simply walked off, but I can only assume I was wracked by mother guilt. My decision to inflict caffeine on my unborn child had been criticised by a stranger. So, I accepted the weak hot milk option and watched as a minuscule drop of coffee was tipped into an oversized takeaway paper cup. It was a basically a babycino for grown-ups,” she added.

Alexandra’s frustration in the piece (link here) is clear, but obviously she couldn’t help but cave to the pressure. How does this incident make you feel?
