A major investigation is underway following claims that sick children were given water instead of chemotherapy while being treated in Mexican hospitals.
Miguel Angel Yunes Linares, a governor of Veracruz, has accused his predecessor, Javier Duarte, of committing the shocking medical fraud.
In a statement, Linares said: “We have done tests on a medication given a children, a paediatric chemotherapy that wasn’t really a medication. It was an inert substance, practically distilled water.”
Linares went on to condemn the crime as ‘brutal’ and ‘inhuman’.
A more detailed investigation and report is currently being carried out, and legal complaints will be filed in due course.
The horrific revelation came to light during an investigation into Duarte, who went on the run last October when he was linked to a cartel.
A probe was launched after $1.6 billion went missing from various government departments, with Duarte believed to be responsible.
