Hearts went out to the victims and survivors of the tragic Carrickmines fire of last weekend, and there has been an outpouring of sympathy ever since.

What these people and their loved ones have been through doesn’t bear thinking about – which is why so many are shocked this week at the response of certain locals in the community.

Plans were in place to temporarily relocate a halting site to a south Dublin estate, to accommodate the families affected by the fire, but protesters yesterday delayed initial construction stages by blocking the entrance to the area with their cars.

Residents of Rockville Drive were responding to a letter they received from the Dun Laoghaire/ Rathdown County Council, informing them that work was to begin on a temporary re-homing project for the families.

Commenting on the shocking behaviour of locals, Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly said last night: “I think it says an awful lot about Irish society, and in a very disturbing way.”

“The nation is heartbroken about what happened last weekend. We have responsibility for communities, we have responsibility for traveller housing. I have responsibility for fire services, and we are very much across this issue,” he added.

The Minister went on to confirm that his department is working on another site to accommodate the families.
