Following the tragic death of 18-year-old Dublin teenager, Ana Hick, popular RTÉ presenter Kathryn Thomas has reached out to the family and spoken of her shock at the weekend's devastating events.

Commenting on the tragedy in her weekly column for the Irish Daily Star, the Operation Transformation presenter acknowledged the folly of youth, saying: "We all took risks at that age, whether it was drinking too much, waking up not remembering what happened, taking drugs or just ending in situations which left us exposed to danger."

Recalling certain moments in her life, Kathryn said: "At that age you feel infallible, you just assume that nothing bad could ever happen to you."

Paying tribute to the close bond shared by Ana and her mother Elga, Kathyrn revealed she shed a tear over the touching video Ana's mother uploaded to her Facebook page in the aftermath of her daughter's tragic death, saying: "The video of 18-year-old Ana and her mum Elga singing a Disney song in their car brought me to tears."

Ana, whose funeral took place in Dalkey yesterday, was eulogised by her grief stricken mother who said: "Ana was larger than life. She came smashing into Tim's and my life like a comet, and she was welcomed immediately into our lives."

Paying tribute to her beloved daughter, Elga went on to say: "She lit up everyone's lives from the time she was a baby. She commanded respect and attention. When she walked into a room you knew she was there, with her big eyes, her big smile, her hands in the air."

In her column, Kathryn insisted that the circumstances surrounding Ana's death did not justify judgement and wished the Hick family well as they attempt to come to terms to life without Ana.

Amid investigations into Ana's untimely demise, it has been revealed that a further six people were hospitalised at the weekend, with a source telling The Herald: "A member of staff at the hospital then contacted gardai saying it was no coincidence that so many people were admitted to the hospital on the same night, and a nurse suggested there was a correlation between Ms Hick and the other six people falling ill."

Our thoughts go out to all those affected by the weekend's frightening events.
