According to new figures released by the Department of the Environment, the number of homeless families in Ireland has increased by a staggering 76% since the beginning of the new year.

The revelation comes ahead of a meeting, chaired by an Taoiseach Enda Kenny, which is scheduled to take place tomorrow and aims to address the homeless issue.

Statistics show that while just over 400 families were without a home at the start of 2016, that figure had risen to a whopping 700 at the beginning of August.

Calling on the government to honour previously-made promises, Simon Communities insist the issue requires immediate attention.

Putting the figures into perspective, national spokesperson fot the Simon Communities, Niamh Randall, said: "The numbers released this weekend are really devastating. We're talking about 707 families - 1,500 children - trapped in emergency accommodation with no option of a home any time soon. It isn’t good enough."

Appealing directly to the Taoiseach, Niamh continued:"We are asking Enda Kenny to match the rhetoric with action and take the measures necessary to address this homelessness and housing crisis to ensure these people have a home for good."

According to the data, there are 3,372 adults and 1,500 children living in emergency accommodation in Ireland.
