From physical to hormonal changes, we all know just how tough, emotional and overwhelming pregnancy can be. But, sadly, for some women this is not all they have to contend with during their nine months.

According to the Herald, at least 17 expectant women are living in tents, squats and cars because they have nowhere else to go. And social workers believe this number is “just the tip of the iceberg”.

At the end of last month, Anchora, a Dublin City Centre refuge for pregnant women, had 17 mums-to-be on their referral list, and their spokesperson Mary McCarthy says they are “turning away a huge number” of women every week.

"The situation is really dire, it's scandalous actually and I don't think the public are aware of it," Ms McCarthy said.

Referrals to its services has almost trebled over the past three years and it is expects at least 50 more women to be by the end of the year. According to the report, some social workers are seeing up to five pregnant women a week who have nowhere to live.

Ciara McKenna, Senior social worker at the National Maternity Hospital, says this is the worst she has ever seen it.

"I have been a social worker for nearly 15 years and this is the worst I've ever seen it. Every day there are referrals.Sometimes women will come in with domestic violence issues but won't say they are homeless straight away because they are ashamed. We have people coming to us who never thought they would be looking for help. People who were self-reliant and now can't believe they are sitting in front of a social worker," she said.
