A photo which depicts three children huddling together for warmth in an Indian train station has gone viral.

The photo which was taking by a passing journalist captured the public's attention after it was uploaded to Twitter alongside a message which read: "Can someone please help these helpless kids at New Delhi Railway Station near platform16 entrance."

The tweet, which quickly went viral, came to the attention of local police chief officer Madhur Verma who immediately sent officers to the scene.

However upon arriving at entrance sixteen, they discovered the three children were no longer present which understandably caused concern for the police force.

Searching the station, they found them hiding on another platform, with Madhur Verma revealing: "They were cold, hungry and scared but we soon found out what happened."

According to the police chief, the children's father, who is no longer in a relationship with their mother, deposited them at the station and told them they would soon be collected by their mum.

Police soon learned, however, that this was not the arrangement agreed upon by the children's parents and according to the officer: "When we arrived at the mother's house she was asleep and said she had been working and had not been contacted by her ex-husband. As far as she was concerned the children were staying with him."

The children aged between four and seven were reunited with their mother and police communicated the good news to concerned public saying: "Today morning (sic) safely handed over to mother Ms Tabussum. They are happy!"

Tweets of support flooded in following the happy ending, with one member of the public saying: "Salute to you sir! Officers like you are Delhi's pride!"

According to officers, police are now looking to question the children's father regarding the incident.
