It can be difficult to sleep when you are pregnant with just one child, however, add multiples into the mix and you are bound to suffer from more than a few sleepless nights. Double the babies means double the heartburn, exhaustion, need to pee and nausea making it hard to get some shut eye.

Sleep on your side
Make sure you sleep on your side and never on your back as it can cause breathing problems and affect major blood vessels. It will also mean the weight of the babies will be on a cushion or the bed and not on you and you your head will also be supported. Opt for your left side as it can help with blood flow and circulation to the placenta.

Steer clear of spicy food
Avoid eating spicy food too close to bedtime or at all. You will no doubt already be suffering from heartburn and you don’t want to irritate it further.  The same goes for eating too late at night or a meal that is quite heavy as it can cause indigestion and keep you awake at night.

Don’t sleep on your back
While it is ok to sleep on your back during the early stages, it is important you change your position once your bump gets bigger. This is because when you lie on your back the weight of the babies can lean on a major vein that carries blood to your heart. It can cause low pressure making you feel dizzy and affect blood flow through the placenta.

Don’t sleep on your stomach
While it is ok to sleep on your tummy while the babies are still really tiny, as they grow, you simply won’t feel comfortable, keeping you up all night.

Use a support pillow
Invest in a pregnancy pillow to give you support for when you are sleeping. If you can’t afford one place a number of cushions around your back and between your legs for support and comfort. This will also help keep you in the same position when you are sleeping meaning you are less likely to wake up due to being uncomfortable.

Ask for help
A lot of mums can worry about not being able to get up out of bed, making them feel uncomfortable and unable to sleep. Talk to your other half and make sure they are there for the times when you really are starting to struggle to get up - it will help to put you at ease.
