The discovery of a five-year-old girl in a vehicle which had careered into a ditch in Uttoxeter, Staffordshore stunned crew from the West Midlands Ambulance Service yesterday.

The child, who officials believe may have been trapped in the car for some time, was spotted by cyclists who happened upon the damaged vehicle on the B5030 at Crakemarsh.

According to the ambulance service, the driver of the vehicle did not survive the crash, with officials asserting: "Unfortunately, it was immediately obvious that the man driving had passed away."

Detailing the site of the collision, a spokesman for the service said: "On arrival, crews found a car that was in a ditch; it had suffered considerable damage. It was very foggy at the time."

The child, who was found in the back of the vehicle, complained of back and abdomen pain, and was immediately transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Speaking on behalf of both the ambulance service and the individuals who made the heartwrenching discovery, the spokesman finished: "This was an extremely difficult incident for all involved including the two cyclists who made the discovery."

Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of all those affected.
