The 15-year-old son of a same-sex couple, who is appealing to MLAs in Northern Ireland to reconsider their stance against Marriage Equality, has delivered a very poignant message in a video which has amassed more than 10,000 hits in mere days.

Legislation allowing same-sex marriage was passed in England and Wales in July 2013 and the Republic of Ireland introduced same-sex marriage by popular vote in May of last year, but Northern Ireland has yet to follow suit - a reluctance which the young man at the centre of this footage struggles to understand.

"In Northern Ireland gay marriage is illegal," he began. "In the rest of the UK it's legal, but if you get married in the rest of the UK and come back to Northern Ireland your marriage won't even be recognised."

"In April of last year, a vote was held in the Northern Ireland assembly on this issue," he said.

"The motion read that this assembly welcomes the marriage equality referendum in the south of Ireland, notes the growing number of parliaments across the world have embraced and legislated for marriage equality, respects the rights of religious institutions to define, observe and practice marriage within their beliefs and calls on the executive to legislate for marriage equality for same-sex couples."

Calling out his local MLA, Gordon Dunne, for voting against it, this young man seeks to both change the minds of those who are against marriage equality and reminds those opposing the legislation that their lives will not be affected should the motion be passed.

Take a moment to hear this articulate young man's stance on a matter personal to both him and his family.
