A mother, who allowed her four-year-old son to play alone outside her apartment complex, may now face time behind behind bars after a fellow resident raised the alarm.

Sonya Hendren from California was arrested for child neglect and endangerment after a concerned neighbour contacted child protection services regarding Sonya's decision to allow her little boy, Tomahawk, to play by himself in a gated park approximately 120 feet from his home.

According to reports emerging from the States, Sonja Horrell was stunned to see the child playing alone for almost 20 minutes before becoming concerned by the child's refusal to return to his family home at the request of worried neighbours.

Stunned by developments which may see her face a prison sentence, Tomahawk's mum expressed disbelief, explaining: "He was outside and the neighbour called the cops on us.”

Adamant her child had proved he was capable of the responsibility, Sonya insisted her approach to parenting should not be subject to scrutiny.

"Of course I love him, I do everything for him. I breastfed for 28 months. I cloth-diapered, you know, obviously I’m avoiding helicopter parenting. I’m doing everything," she insisted as she reflected on the incident.

Commenting on the chain of events, Sonya's neighbour admitted she didn't expect Tomahawk's mother to be charged following her contact with police, saying: "I just thought she would get a warning and then she wouldn’t let him be alone again."

Defending her mother's decision to contact authorities,Sonja's daughter Brandi asserted: "I’m not mad she has to do things now to teach her, because what if someone did take him?"

Tomahawk's mum faces six months in prison and probation for three years.
