Teaching your children about money
There is no doubt that having a firm understanding and appreciation of money are important life skills. For parents, it’s reassuring to know knowing that their child is equipped to make informed decisions when it comes to their money.

These are skills that see them through the ups and downs of life. From saving for their very first bike, to their first car. From budgeting their pocket money for the week, to budgeting for their first time away from home. You want your little ones to face the world as money-smart as they can be, knowing the importance of saving and budgeting from an early age.

That’s why Bank of Ireland has developed a learning programme to introduce the basics of financial wellbeing to children to help set them up with good money habits for life. Bank of Ireland has created a practical guide called Talking Cents with Kids, for parents and guardians which means you can introduce the basics of financial education to your children easily and at home. The programme features Ollie the Owl, on a journey of discovery about money.

It has age appropriate material and includes play activities to guide your conversations about saving, spending, planning and managing money well. The guide is free to download at boi.com/ollietheowl.

In addition, Bank of Ireland has a school programme available free of charge to every primary school in Ireland. The programme is designed for 1st to 6th class.  Ollie the Owl, is the hero of the programme, and children follow Ollie on a  journey of discovery about money.  The programme is split into six easy-to-follow money lessons for teachers to deliver in the classroom.

Each lesson is divided into stories, activities and interesting facts, so that children have opportunities to discuss, reflect and learn.  Those interested in this unique free schools programme can register their interest by going to boi.com/ollietheowl.

Let Bank of Ireland- and  Ollie the Owl- help you instil some invaluable financial habits in your little ones, that will stand to them for years and years to come.
