Two teenage boys have been hailed heroes after coming to the rescue of an elderly couple who accidentally drove their vehicle into a lake in Brussels.

Horrified by the events unfolding in the popular leisure spot located in Beervelde, East Flanders, the teenage windsurfer instructors sprung into action and went to the assistance of the petrified couple.

17-year-old Robbe Haems and 18-year-old Bjorn Cuvelier made their way towards the sinking vehicle in a small rubber boat in an effort to save the frightened couple within.

Recalling the traumatic events of the day, Robbe told Belgian news: "I was afraid the man would drown in front of my eyes."

Having been told that the male passenger was disabled and unable to free himself, the two courageous young men helped the women climb to safety before moving their boat to the driver's side of the vehicle and freeing the elderly man trapped within.

Footage of the event has since been uploaded to social media where the teenagers' efforts have been wholeheartedly praised.

Well done to Robbe and Bjorn.
