The referendum on repealing the Eighth Amendment will take place on Friday, May 25.

The official date was confirmed by Ministers Simon Harris and Eoghan Murphy this afternoon.

Eoghan Murphy tweeted, “I’ve just signed the order for polling day on the referendum on repealing the 8th amendment to the constitution and allowing the Oireachtas to legislate in this area - polling will take place on Friday the 25th of May.”

Earlier today, the Bill was passed by the Seanad by 40 votes to 10.

Irish citizens will be asked if they want to repeal the Eighth Amendment or not.

Article 40.3.3 reads:

"The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right."

Simon Harris has encouraged the public to check if they are registered to vote. To find out if you’re registered to vote, click here.
