We recently shared a video on MummyPages of what children with autism experience when in loud situations like a shopping centre.

Well one Cork supermarket has taken measures to make they’re store more autism friendly thanks to the suggestion by a young UCC student.

Scally’s Supervalu in Clonakilty, County Cork has decided to turn off all music and in-store announcements between 7pm and 9pm every Tuesday.

This is in an effort to reduce the amount of sensory stimulation for anyone with autism.

Shop owner Eugene Scally told The Independent: “We don’t realise the massive difference a small change can make.”

“We’ve had a great response to it,” he said.

“People who have hearing aids are delighted with the facility as well because the sound of phones or music or the tannoy ringing can be irritating.”

The initiative was all thanks to Patricia O’Leary from UCC who was researching the area and approached Eugene with the idea.

“She asked me if she’d be interested in facilitating her as part of her study and I was delighted to be asked."
