If you asked us what we would do if a burglar entered our home, the chances are that our answer would be completely different to what would happen in reality. In emergencies such as these, reason and planning go out of the window, and panic can often paralyse us with fear.

This wasn’t the case for one American mother, however, who single-handedly fended off a burglar who entered her home this week as she and her seven-month-old daughter slept.

According to a report by local news agency WLWT, Cincinnati woman Kelly Carpe was asleep on Thursday night when one Jamall Merchant broke into her home, through a side window.

Kelly initially presumed it to be her boyfriend, whom she was expecting home around that time, but she grew concerned when she heard a strange voice.

A glance downstairs confirmed her ‘nightmare’ – the man in the hoodie, climbing up the stairs, was not her boyfriend. Alerted to her screaming, Merchant went back downstairs and came back with a weapon.

Thinking only of her daughter’s protection, Kelly convinced Merchant to go back downstairs with her, promising to give him money.

It was when Merchant asked Kelly to enter her passcode into her phone that she acted – she grabbed the phone, shoved Merchant out of the door, kept it closed with her shoulder, and then managed to lock it. She contacted police immediately.

The police arrived just minutes later, and Merchant was arrested.

It turns out that Kelly’s wasn’t the only home targeted by Merchant. Indeed, police have linked him to 11 crimes in and around Kelly’s neighbourhood carried out during the month of March.

Thankfully, Kelly and her baby are okay after their ordeal, and Merchant is now awaiting a court hearing.

SHARE to say ‘well done’ to this incredibly brave mum.
