Talking to your child about serious topics such as death or illness can prove incredibly difficult at times, and one three-year-old’s reaction to finding out about homelessness has gone viral.

Little Patrick McClung, from America, was absolutely devastated when he recently discovered that there are people who sleep on the streets and often go hungry because they can’t afford to feed themselves.

So upset was this tot, that he decided he absolutely had to do something to help and make a difference – and his proud mum, Destinee, documented the entire thing online.

Today Patrick was asking some questions and I (fully believing in being honest with my children) ended up telling him...

After drying his tears, little Patrick came up with a plan with his mother: they would organise the donation of much-needed items through a homeless drive in his native Anchorage.

Although he cannot yet write perfectly, Patrick traced over his mother’s words and created a sign for his initiative, listing all of the items he was seeking.

Sharing her story with local media, mum Destinee said that so far Patrick has collected seven bags’ worth of items which they are currently storing beneath the Christmas tree.

As well as organising the drive, Patrick also visited a local soup kitchen and gave out desserts to patrons.

Praising her little one, Destinee said: “I’m so proud of him. I think a lot of us aren’t looking to help. We just live our lives, we’re just used to homeless people and all of the issues that are around us – it’s just normal.”

Well done, Patrick; what a role model.
