As parents, we may think we provide our children with everything they could possibly need, but it looks like a great many of us have been falling short on a number of levels if the results of a recent study are anything to go by.

According to data emerging from the United States, an inordinate number of parents are failing to provide their children with the attention they need as a result of their incessant use of hand-held technology.

The study, which harnessed the opinions of 249 families with children aged between 10 and 17, established that the use of technology is a serious bone of contention among parents and their children, with the latter revealing they wished they could restrict their parents' use.

Further to this, the study, according to a report in The Independent, established that children would readily implement a rule which would prevent their parents from sharing information and photographs online unless permitted by their offspring.

In line with excessive use of technology, children also expressed concern regarding their safety, with many youngsters admitting that they have felt compelled to stop their parents from texting while driving.

Commenting on the study's findings, co-author of the study, Sarita Schoenebeck, revealed: "Twice as many children as parents expressed concerns about family members oversharing personal information about them on Facebook and other social media without permission."

Elaborating further still, Sarita who is assistant professor in the University of Michigan’s School of Information, continued: "Many children said they found that content embarrassing and felt frustrated when their parents continued to do it."
