There have been a number of incredible stories regarding historic ‘firsts’ in recent times, and this latest story will no doubt go down in the archives.

A toddler in China has made medical history after becoming the first person in the world to have her entire skill reconstructed by 3D printers.

Three-year-old Han Han was born with hydrocephalus, a rare condition which resulted in her head growing to four times the normal size. This put her health in major jeopardy, with experts forecasting that she could even go blind.

However, according to People, the tot underwent breakthrough surgery yesterday and is expected to make a full recovery after the 17-hour procedure.

Han Han’s story is particularly sad. Her mother left when she was just a year old, leaving it solely up to her father, Chen, to earn the 100 yuan daily needed for his daughter’s drugs.

The child’s latest treatment was calculated to cost 400,000 to 500,000 Chinese Yuan, and a quarter of the cost was collected from donations made by family and friends; the remainder was provided by kind strangers.

We will keep you updated on little Han Han’s progress.
