Most of us try to eat healthy, cut back or even stop drinking caffeine, and exercise more than they normally would while expecting, there are a few things you can do to have a green pregnancy.
By changing a few things, not only will be ensuring you have a healthy and happy pregnancy for both you and baby, you will also be protecting the environment.
Swop your plastic containers for glass
While most plastic containers and tupperware are BPA free, not all are and it is important you steer clear of it, even when you aren’t pregnant. BPA is a chemical that can cause brain and behaviour problems in children and affect the prostate glands in foetuses and while it has yet to be proven to what extent it is dangerous, you are better off steering clear of it.
Eat organic
What you put into your body definitely has an effect on your growing baby so it is important you are careful about what you eat. Try to cook with organic foods as much as possible and while it can be a little more pricey, you will be reassured by the fact that fewer chemicals will be going into your body.
Go for in season produce
Cut down your carbon footprint by going for fruit and vegetables that are in season. You will also be saving yourself a few bob as they are a lot cheaper than buying those that have to be shipped from abroad.
Go for natural fibres
If you are treating yourself to any maternity wear, try to go for cotton, wool or silk if at all possible. It will be a little more expensive than popping into your local highstreet store, but your skin will thank you for it.
Cut down on your aerosols
Now is the time to cut back on the amount of aerosols you use around the home. Stop using air fresheners, polish and deodorants sprays as they can contain toxins that aren't good for baby. Instead, use a micro fibre cloth for dust, a roll on for your body and open your windows to let fresh air in.
We understand that it is not possible to go completely green - time and money are always going to factor in, but even if you make one change you will definitely reap the rewards.
