Apart from the kitchen, the living room is one of the most frequently used rooms in the house. However, if it is cluttered without proper flow it can make you feel stressed out rather than relaxed sitting in it.

To make it flow a little better and to use it more effectively, follow these five tips:

Create space
Make sure there is enough space between the furniture – the couch, coffee table and side lamps - to be able to move around easily.

Establish a focal point
Try to avoid using the TV as the focal point of the room. Instead go for the largest piece of furniture like the couch and centre everything around this.

Avoid leaning items against the wall
If possible, try to keep items pushed away from the wall. Obviously this is only manageable if your room is quite big as it can create a lot of wasted space in small rooms.

Have a variety of sizes, textures and contrasts
Make sure you incorporate various sizes, textures and contrasts into the room. This will help your eye to look around the room rather than at one particular level. It also creates character.

Use your corners
Corners can often go to waste so make use of them for storage, tall lamps or even a table.
