Moving home is a stressful business – and that’s before you add kids into the mix.

Between house hunting, selling a home, dealing with tears over ruined lives and refereeing fights over who gets which bedroom, mums can be driven ragged by the mere thoughts of moving to a new place.

Here are some top tips to make moving easier on your family.

The Kids
Don’t shut them out
Kids can usually sense when something major is happening, so keeping your moving plans a secret will only make them think there’s a reason they should be against it. As soon as you’ve decided to move, tell them and explain why. You can even bring them to viewings and make them feel like a part of the decision.

Highlight the positives
Leaving friends, schools and their familiar surroundings behind can be scary, so give them reasons to be excited. Talk about the fact that they will have their own room or maybe a bigger garden. Highlight all the new friends they could make and even clubs they could join. If you are downsizing and they have to share a bedroom, get them excited about planning how they’ll decorate and divide up the room.

Choose the right time
The move will be hard for your child, so try not to move them during the school year if possible – this will make their lives feel less disrupted. This is especially important if the move means they are changing schools; this way they will get to finish the year with their friends and then start afresh in September.

Help them keep up with old friends
Invite their pals over to see the new house when you are settled and let them keep in touch via Skype. Losing friends is the hardest part of a move, so make sure your child doesn’t feel like their friends are gone.
