You might think it's just an old wives tale, but the 'nesting period' is actually very common among pregnant women. It can strike at any time, although it is most usual during the final few weeks of pregnancy, when you'll suddenly find yourself with a strong urge to clean and organise your home.

While there are plenty of positives (when else are we going to have the energy to reorganise our closets?), the process can be overwhelming for mums as the list of things to do seems endless.

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your nesting period and keep things as calm as possible.

1. A good foundation
The nesting process can be lots of fun if you don’t get stressed. Make a list of things you want to sort out and assess how many you can (realistically) get done in the time you have. Start with the most important and assign jobs to each day leading up to your due date - one big job or two smaller jobs per day.

2. Stay on track
After you’ve made a reasonable list, stick to it. Don’t try to do extra in one day and don’t slack off on another (unless you’re feeling unwell, of course!). Stick to a steady pace and you’re more likely to be productive.

3. Be realistic
Don’t let yourself hang on to things you don’t use. Be strict with yourself and don’t keep things because you might use them someday – you know you probably won’t. Obviously some things have serious sentimental value and should be kept even if you don't use them regularly, but do try to be objective.

4. Get organised
Have separate boxes or bags for things you want to donate, throw away or give to family and friends. It will help you stay focused and keep things organised.

5. Helping hands
Friends and family love being involved in any way they can when there’s a new baby coming, so they’ll be more than happy to pitch in with some spring cleaning. Make sure you get someone else to do the heavy lifting and strenuous cleaning.

6. Be safe
Remember you’re pregnant and don’t overdo it. Avoid harsh household cleaners, make sure rooms are well ventilated when using anything with chemicals in it and don’t lift anything heavy. We know it's tough when you're used to being self-suffient, but this is definitely a time to be sensible.
