We have heard devastating stories of tragic family accidents over the past few months, but thank heavens there was a positive ending to the latest one.
A German backpacker has been hailed as a hero, after jumping into Sydney’s Cockle Bay Wharf and rescuing a drowning mother and her son this week.
According to 9 News, Jing-wah Zhao had taken her young son John to the cinema to see Finding Dory, but the pair left when the little boy grew scared.
After leaving the theatre, Jing-wah said that she took her eyes off of her son for ‘less than one second’ – and when she looked back, he had fallen into the water.
With her son ‘submerged’ under the water, Jing-wah jumped in after him - despite being unable to swim herself.
It was Jing-wah’s screams which alerted tourist Tony Driessler to the scene, and he jumped into the water after the struggling pair. Thanks to Tony’s courageous actions, both Jing-wah and little John were rescued, safe and sound.
The child was reportedly treated by paramedics at the scene, then taken to hospital as a precaution.
Thank heavens both mother and child are safe now.
