It has been confirmed that a teenage boy from Co Galway has died following a swimming accident in Germany last week.

16-year-old Jack McHugh passed away in Munich Hospital yesterday following last week's tragic incident.

The teen, who had been swimming in the Wurn river with two of his friends, had been in a critical condition in the German hospital, and tragically lost his fight for life on Tuesday.

Speaking to the Tuam Herald, Cllr Tom McHugh said: “The authorities recovered him from the water quickly and the doctors treating him tried very hard to save his life but by Monday of this week it became apparent that there was irreparable damage to his organs and he passed away at midday today.”

It has been established that Jack, who had been visiting an uncle in the German city, was a sport enthusiast who had recently completed his Junior Cert at St. Jarlath’s College in Tuam.

A post-mortem is due to be carried out before his body will be returned to Ireland.

Jack is survived by his parents, Declan and Mary McHugh, and two younger sisters.

Our thoughts are with Jack's family and friends at this devastating time.
