The president of Turkey has come in for major criticism this week over controversial comments he made about women who do not have children.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan was delivering a speech to Turkey’s Women’s and Democracy Association, when he described women who are not mothers as “deficient” and leading an “incomplete” life.

President Erdogan took particular issue with women who have decided not to start a family on account of their career.

“A woman who abstains from maternity by saying ‘I am working’ means that she is actually denying her femininity,” he told the audience.

He went on to add: “A woman who rejects motherhood, who refrains from being around the house, however successful her working life is, is deficient, is incomplete.”

Unsurprisingly, President Erdogan – who previously said that women should have at least three children – has been the subject of major criticism online.

Social media users have taken to Twitter in their droves to hit back against his ‘terrible’ argument.

“Turkish president thinks we should have three children. Can’t remember asking him for a view,” tweeted one woman.

Meanwhile, another commented: “We are at least as capable to have a successful career and not just breed. Turkey need to fix its HR before lecturing.”

Given how passionately he spoke on the subject, we can’t imagine the President will be going back on his words any time soon – but let’s just hope some of the stronger responses online will help to open his mind.
