UCD is set to re-categorise more than 170 of its toilets on campus as gender neutral. The university will also introduce transgender changing facilities in its sports centre.

The move has been hailed by Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone as progress towards 'full equality for all', the Irish Times reports.

The initiative is part of an overall policy put forward by UCD to make transgender and gender-fluid students and staff feel more comfortable on campus.

As well, transgender students will be allowed to change their gender on official university award documents and other papers without providing gender recognition certificates.

Speaking more about the change in facilities, Katherine told the Irish Times, "Our universities are drivers of change, promoters of equality and champions of justice."

"UCD is continuing that proud tradition by providing a welcoming campus for trans and gender-fluid students and employees," said the TD, who herself received her MBA from the institution.

The re-designation of single-stall toilets and changing rooms as gender neutral will begin soon.

The UCD Sports Centre's multi-stall changing facilities will also have signs so that transgender people can use the facility for whichever gender they identify with.

This adds to the work of many other Irish universities that have pushed for greater inclusiveness for people of all genders.

Some of the toilets at DCU and DIT have also been re-categorised as gender neutral.

As well, Trinity College Dublin is starting to replace the word 'freshman' with the gender-neutral term 'fresh'.

Many, however, view UCD's 'gender identity and expression policy' as the biggest step towards making individuals of all genders feel welcome on campus.

What do you think of this new policy, mums?
