As of today, parents can register their children for free GP care providing they are under the age of six.

According to Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar, 60% of doctors have decided to partake of the scheme which will entitle 300,000 children to avail of free service from their local GP from July 1st of this year..

Commenting on the figures, the minister has asserted that he expects three quarters of the country's practices to have signed up by the end of the week.

The scheme, which has divided opinion among the country's family doctors, will be providing children with two specific health checks over the course of the plan, with Minister for Primary Care, Kathleen Lynch, explaining: "It will be about height, it will be about general health- we have a particular interest in obesity too."

Speaking to RTÉ's The Week in Politics on Sunday, Mr. Varadkar asserted that he expects 80 to 90 per cent of GPs will have signed up to the scheme by the end of the year.
