It has been revealed that University Hospital Kerry is currently reviewing over 46,000 files and scans.

The scans being reviewed include CAT scans, x-rays and ultrasounds.

It is believed that it could take up to ten weeks to complete the review.

It is understood that over 26,000 patients’ scans will be involved in the review.

The review follows several patient safety incidents which occurred during the summer.

The South/South West Hospital Group stated that they have launched an investigation following the reports of three Serious Reportable Events during the summer.

It is understood that the reports are about one of the hospital’s specialists.

According to RTÉ, a hospital employee has been suspended.

The review is set to affect patients from Kerry, North Cork and South Limerick who attended the hospital from March 2016 to July 2017.

18,000 files have been reviewed since Friday, December 15, but it has been confirmed that only a small number of patients have been asked to come back to the hospital for “purely precautionary” reasons.

They shared that less than 20 patients were asked to attend the hospital for “repeat imaging.” They also confirmed that none of the people who were asked back needed additional medical treatment.

The hospital shared, "Any patients deemed to require urgent intervention will be immediately contacted before the full audit is complete.”

A dedicated information line has been set up at 1800-742-900, which will run from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday.
