Just this week, a study shed light on the fears of working mums and mums-to-be regarding treatment at the hands of their employers, and this latest report gives weight to their concerns.

A woman has won her legal case against her former employer, who claimed that she could no longer do her job properly after getting pregnanct and becoming a mother.

Rosario Juarez won the case against auto parts retailer AutoZone, following a long and drawn-out court battle over her demotion and pay cut.

The mother was hired by the company back in 2000 and was promoted to a management position four years later. However, when she announced the news of her pregnancy in September 2005, she was met with an astonishing reaction from her manager.

She told the court how her boss said, “Congratulations…I guess”, before going on to tell her that he ‘felt sorry for her’. After trying to get Juarez to stand down from her role, telling her that she could no longer handle the responsibilities of the job, the manager later demoted the new mother and cut her pay.

Part of Jaurez’s case was a claim that there is a “glass ceiling” within the company that keeps women from getting promoted.

The mother went on to launch a record-breaking $185 million lawsuit against the company; and while AutoZone initially fought the suit, the company finally dropped its challenge this week.
