Getting your first scan is both an exciting and scary time for you. It is during this routine examination that you will see your baby for the first time and the doctor will assess them. Your scan will usually take place after the 12th week, although this varies for every hospital. Depending on certain situations – your baby’s development and your age - you may have to have more than one scan.

Here’s what to expect from your appointment:

What is a scan for?
A scan in the early weeks is usually done to date your pregnancy. It also helps to check on your baby’s development, measure them, listen to their heartbeat and see if you have more than one baby in there.

Do I need to prep for it?
Your midwife or doctor will give you an information leaflet that will tell you what you need to do. You won’t really need to do much although you may be asked to drink plenty of fluids as a full bladder can help bring the womb up a little closer making it easier to see the baby.

What will happen?
When you are in the room you will be asked to lie on a bed and lift up your top. The sonographer will then put a jelly-like substance on your stomach - this won’t hurt although it can be a little cold.

How do they see the baby?
A special scanner will be rubbed over the jelly substance and this will send ultrasonic soundwaves down to the baby. These waves bounce off the infant and project an image of it onto the monitor. They won’t have your baby in the slightest.

What is the sonographer doing?
While you are cooing over the tiny little figure, the sonogapher will accurately date your pregnancy, look for any abnormalities and make sure your baby is developing correctly.

Should you go?
You will be given an appointment for at least one scan and there is no reason why you should not attend it. If you have been asked back for another scan, make sure you ask your midwife or doctor why to help relieve any fears or concerns you might have.

How long will it take?
The scan won’t last long, usually about 15 minutes and is usually an exciting time for everyone involved. Make sure you ask for your scan picture, it is something you will want to treasure forever.
