New research conducted by Boston University found that male fertility can be affected by not getting enough sleep – but it found that getting too much is JUST as bad.

The study looked at 695 couples – men aged 21 and older and women aged 21 to 45 – all undergoing IVF, and found that men who sleep less than six hours have a 43 percent less chance of getting a woman pregnant.

However, it also found that sleeping for over nine hours reduces their chances by 42 percent.

The research involved seeing how much sleep each male got a night, checking every eight weeks for 12 months until their partner became pregnant.

"Those men who sleep seven to nine hours a night have the lowest risk of adverse health outcomes,” lead author Dr Lauren Wise said, according to the MailOnline

“'Sleep problems specifically have been associated with lower sperm concentrations, total sperm count and per cent of normal sperm morphology (shape), as well as decreased testosterone levels, but no studies have looked at sleep and male fertility.”

The study was presented at the annual congress of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, where Dr Wise explained how the “majority of daily testosterone release occurs during sleep".
