Welcoming a child into the world is a truly amazing thing, and we have the utmost respect for anyone who makes the decision to do so. But if a woman – for whatever reason – decides not to become a mother, why on Earth should she receive abuse?

A British woman has revealed that she received a barrage of abuse after writing an opinion editorial about her decision not to start a family.

Holly Brockwell’s candid piece appeared in a BBC publication, and in it she discussed her plans to be sterilised.

After the piece went live online however, Holly was inundated with abusive comments and insults – so much so that she has been forced to shut down her Twitter account.

In response to the abuse she has received since sharing her story, Holly said: “There’s no acceptable reason to not want a baby, it seems.”

Commenting on the barrage of negative messages received as early as half an hour after her post went live, Holly admitted that people said “things that I can’t repeat and I would never say to anyone no matter what they had done”.

Just like the debate on breastfeeding in public, it seems that this is a highly sensitive topic that can, sadly, bring out the worst in people.

What are your thoughts on the backlash Holly has received?
