Sadly, it’s an occurrence that has been reported far too often in recent times, and authorities have had to intervene in yet another case of an attempted sale of a child.

According to reports, a 20-year-old mother from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa was arrested this week for attempting to sell her child on Gumtree for R5 000 (South African Rand).

The young mother is said to have been arrested by an undercover agent who had agreed to purchase the 19-month-old child. The child has now been put in the care of a social worker.

The as yet unnamed woman is set to appear in court later today, charged with human trafficking.

An insider involved in the tragic case has told the media that investigations into the role played by the classified adverts site is also underway.

This isn’t the first time such a report has come to our attention in recent times. Closer to home, a 28-year-old man was arrested in Manchester this year, following claims he made several attempts to sell his baby in a local shopping centre.

Our hearts go out to this baby, and we are sending our best wishes for its future.
