A woman from Tanzania suffered a rare and extremely dangerous condition which caused her baby to grow in her abdomen rather than her womb.

At 32-weeks, the expectant mother went to her doctor after suffering from a pain in her stomach. Doctors were puzzled by the pain and she was sent to hospital for a scan where they discovered the shocking news.

The woman who’d had two antenatal checkups and an ultrasound throughout her pregnancy was quickly operated on and thankfully, a healthy baby girl weighing 3lbs 7oz was born. According to reports, the baby, who developed in the mother without an amniotic sac, and her mum are said to be doing fine.

According to Dr Jill Rabim, chief of ambulatory care, obstetrics and gynaecology at a New York hospital: “Many times, these pregnancies are not diagnosed until labour. The woman is going through labour, the cervix is dilated and you are wondering, 'Why is the patient having contractions and nothing is happening?’”
