Under a €34 million redress scheme to open on Monday, the majority of women who underwent a symphysiotomy are likely to receive an award of €100,000.

Retired judge Maureen Harding Clark has been appointment to run the scheme and says she is proposing banded payments of €50,000, €100,000 and €150,000.

About 350 women underwent the procedure in Irish hospitals between 1940 and 1990. 150 of these women have begun High Court proceedings, but will have to withdraw these to qualify for the scheme.

Victims have been given four weeks to apply an additional four weeks can be requested “in exceptional circumstances”.

Survivors of Symphysiotomy, a group representing women, rejected the scheme yesterday but has advised its members to apply anyway.

“Our advice to any survivor thinking of applying for the scheme is to heed the advice of their legal advisers, apply for €100,000 and keep their legal actions going forward,” said spokeswoman Marie O’Connor.
