A 28-year-old man has died in a house fire in Co. Louth and two others have been taken to hospital.

The man was killed in an explosion which occurred overnight.

The explosion happened at The Cottages on the Termonfeckin Road in Beaulieu, Drogheda.

The woman in her 20s and a man in his 50s involved in the incident were taken to hospital where they are being treated for burn injuries.

It is understood that their injuries are not life-threatening.

Early reports have claimed that a boiler caused the explosion.

We urge parents to ensure that their boiler is serviced on a regular basis. It is recommended that you get your boiler serviced once a year by a registered gas installer

Always make sure the engineer is registered. You can find this out easily as a new scheme asks all registered engineers to carry an ID card.

The RGI can conduct a safety inspection when they are servicing your boiler. If they find any issues with the boiler they will be able to correct them if you wish.

If you fail to fix a problem with your boiler the RGI will issue a Notification of Hazard. You will then be responsible to amend the problem, which has to be fixed by a registered gas installer.

Householders are highly advised to check the ID card before letting anyone begin work on their gas appliances, especially on the boiler.

Installing a carbon monoxide alarm in the room where your boiler is located is vital. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. It has no colour or smell, but the alarm will detect it if there is a leak.

Signs of a carbon monoxide leak include condensation on your windows, an obscure smell when your boiler is on, discolouration on the appliance.

The physical signs of carbon monoxide poisoning include lethargy, drowsiness, sickness, headaches and stomach pains.

Carbon Monoxide alarms can be purchased in most hardware shops.

Remember to stay safe at home this winter. If you haven’t had your boiler serviced this year, have it done as soon as possible.
