Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy nights out or have to put your normal beauty regime aside.

Many of us mums like to apply false tan for special occasion whether it’s a wedding or a birthday party, but when you are pregnant baby’s safety obviously overrides anything else.

Deciding if you want to use fake tan during pregnancy is a big deal, but the following advice will help you make your decision.

Risks:

The main ingredient in false tan is dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which is a non-toxic substance that reacts to the outer layers of the skin and creates the brown pigment.

However, while there are no known risks to using the product, it is important to bear in mind that your skin will be extra sensitive and you may have a reaction.

If you do want to use it, ALWAYS do a patch test before, even if you have been using the same product for years.

What to avoid:

From sprays to lotions, there are a number of different types of tanning products available on the market.

However, do try to stick to lotions and creams as it is not known if there are any risks associated with inhaling the spray. This includes tanning booths that use a spray - stick to rub on ones instead!

If you do have any concerns or are a little undecided, make sure you talk to your GP before doing anything.
