An exercise-loving mum has received criticism for posting a picture of her toned body on Facebook, with the caption: 'What's your excuse?'

Mum-of-three Maria Kang (32) from Los Angeles, California, runs a non-profit business called Fitness without Borders, which promotes physical education in schools and local communities.

In the picture posted to her followers, Kang appears with her three young sons, dressed in revealing workout clothes.

While many commentators call her an 'inspiration,’ a significant number have accused her of being 'insulting' and a 'fat shaming bully'.

One mum even said: 'People like you who post pictures like this make people like me cry because I know that without surgery to lose the extra skin I will never look like you.

After briefly listing the fitness obstacles in her own life, such as her business and a previous eating disorder, she concludes: “What you interpret is not MY fault. It's Yours. The first step in owning your life, your body and your destiny is to OWN the thoughts that come out of your own head.”

While exercise and diet is always important, we think it’s more important to encourage mums to be happy and healthy rather than making them feel inadequate for not having washboard abs or toned thighs.

So mums, stop trying to achieve the perfect body and instead:
  • Make some time for brisk walks during the week. These will keep your heart healthy and improve your mood.
  • Make sure you’re eating balanced meals with lots of fruit and veg. Protein and healthy fats like Omega 3 are also important. Oh and don’t feel like you can’t treat yourself.
  • And most importantly, enjoy life with your kids.
